How to Get from Vienna City Center to the Airport by Train
Getting from Vienna’s city center to the airport is simple and inexpensive. There are several train options available, depending on your preference and budget.
The airport is located in Schwechat, which is outside of Vienna. This means you need a ticket that covers the full distance. If you select Vienna Airport on the ÖBB ticket machines, you will automatically get the correct fare.
There are two major train stations near the city center that offer direct connections to the airport.
From Wien Mitte
The easiest and most affordable option is the Schnellbahn S7. This commuter train takes about 25 minutes to reach the airport and costs 4.50 EUR.
Another option is the City Airport Train (CAT), which is slightly faster (16 minutes) but significantly more expensive (14.90 EUR one way per adult). For most travelers, the S7 is the better choice due to its affordability
From Hauptbahnhof (Main Train Station)
If you start at Hauptbahnhof, you have two options. Both cost 4.50 EUR.
Take a direct ÖBB Railjet train to the airport.
Take the Schnellbahn. There is no direct Schnellbahn connection from Hauptbahnhof to the airport, but you can take the S1 or S2 to Rennweg station and then change to the S7. This is quite convenient since the trains use the same platform.
Ticket Information
Before boarding, buy a ticket at an ÖBB ticket machine. Select Vienna Airport, pay 4.50 EUR, and you’re set. If you have a valid Vienna public transport ticket, you may be eligible for a discount—check the ticket machine for options.
Important: Don’t get mixed up! Wiener Linien, Vienna’s public transport operator, also sells tickets to Vienna Airport at its ticket machines. Make sure to buy the correct one (Single journey VOR to the airport). These machines also sell tickets for Vienna Airport Lines buses and the City Airport Train (CAT), which are not valid on ÖBB/Schnellbahn connections.
Other Transport Options
Besides trains, there are additional ways to reach the airport:
Vienna Airport Lines Buses, which connect various points in the city to the airport.
City Airport Train (CAT), a faster but more expensive direct service from Wien Mitte.
